A Life Changing Experience..."Back in January of 2006 I had the opportunity to intern with Smolin & Lupin. I was nervous about this opportunity. Although I had some tax experience, I felt like it was not adequate. I was told that I would be involved with accounting tasks such as write-up work, going out to clients and even audits. I did not think I was ready for this since I hadn't taken my auditing course yet. But it was time for me to progress with my career, and so it began.
Within a couple weeks I was assisting in litigation work, as well as the obvious tax work at the beginning of the 'busy season.' I found this to be a great learning experience. I was not just learning from a textbook, but actually learning hands-on, the best type of learning. I, as well as mostly every other college student, am afraid of making mistakes and wondering if I would be frowned upon if I did, but that was all wrong. At Smolin & Lupin, they take pride in training their new staff.
I was treated as a full time staff member and with respect. I was given the same responsibilities and deadlines as everyone else. I was given a mentor who I was able to talk to if any problems arose, both personally as well as work-related. The members have an open door policy, which made it easier to approach them with a question or a situation. I went out to clients and assisted in field work. The exposure I received was better than words can describe. The internship program was much more than a learning experience; it was a life-changing one. The firm is a very close niche and has pleasant working environment. I really felt like I belonged. By the end of the internship, I had learned so much in areas of tax, as well as auditing and accounting, litigation and basic accounting procedures that isn't learned in a classroom. That's why I consider it to have been a life changing experience."
